The legal name must match the IRS record exactly, hyphen included. Stripe states plainly that a US company can operate from another country. Your passport is rarely the problem.

You will know which of six documented causes blocked you, how to fix it from the Dashboard, and when to stop trying. The error “this combination of tax ID and legal name wasn’t recognized by the IRS” means your name and EIN do not match IRS records. Copy the name from your SS-4 confirmation letter or Letter 147C, character for character.

The second is a brand-new EIN. Stripe’s help page on a newly issued tax ID that won’t verify says the IRS takes three to four weeks on average to register it. Upload the SS-4 confirmation letter meanwhile.

The third is the address. Stripe wants the physical location where most of the work happens, never a PO box. The fourth is identity: under Stripe’s acceptable verification documents, a person living outside the account’s country must verify with a passport, in color, never a screenshot.

The fifth is a website that does not show what you sell. The sixth is the business itself, checked against Stripe’s prohibited and restricted businesses list. Gambling and adult content are refused outright, while crypto exchanges or telemedicine need extra review.

Stripe and four fallbacks, compared line by line

When Stripe rejects the business itself, Paddle is the strongest fallback, because it does not depend on Stripe. It charges the customer, collects and remits sales tax or VAT, then pays you the net.

What 100 sales at $50 cost on each platform

On one hundred $50 sales paid with non-US cards, Stripe takes $250 and Paddle takes $300. Rerun it with your own numbers:

Fee per sale = price × published percentage + fixed fee + international card surcharge.

Stripe takes 4.4% of the price plus 30 cents, so $2.50 a sale. Paddle’s 5% plus 50 cents gives $3.00. Polar Starter adds a 1.5% surcharge for non-US cards, which brings the hundred sales to $375.

The $50 gap between Stripe and Paddle pays for tax handling. With Stripe, your LLC handles sales tax and VAT itself; Paddle says it collects the tax and files the returns for you.

On a $10 app, Paddle’s 50-cent fixed fee alone eats 5% of the price. That is why Paddle invites sellers under $10 to ask for custom pricing.

The options, one by one

Stripe after a fix suits most founders; Lemon Squeezy and Polar rank lower because both lean on Stripe.

Stripe, once the file is fixed

If the refusal came from paperwork, stay. The closure email links to a review form, and Stripe’s page on closed accounts says to use it if you think your business was misunderstood or miscategorized. Send every document through the Dashboard, never by email.

A founder in Ukraine who bills SaaS subscriptions wrote on Trustpilot in October 2026 that setup went fast, webhooks stay reliable, and the dashboard tracks payments and customers. A small business in Belize had a payment hold. A support agent rearranged its accounts and restored instant payouts, according to its Trustpilot review of October 18, 2026.

The catch: under its services agreement, Stripe can hold a reserve against your liabilities and suspend an account it sees as risky. Answer each Dashboard request quickly.

Paddle, the independent merchant of record

Paddle suits software and SaaS founders whose business Stripe will not take. As legal seller, it handles refunds, tax and buyer emails. Its pricing page lists no monthly fee.

A customer in the US reported on Trustpilot in October 2026 that Paddle refunded an unrecognized charge in about two minutes. A buyer in Switzerland chatted with support in mid-October and saw the refund within five days.

Its list of what you can’t sell excludes physical goods, consulting or coaching without software, adult content, gambling and financial services.

Lemon Squeezy, simple but owned by Stripe

Lemon Squeezy charges the same base fee as Paddle, with a creator-friendly checkout. Its January 2026 update confirms Stripe bought it in 2024, which makes it a weak refuge after a Stripe refusal.

Polar, built for developers

Polar targets developers and micro-SaaS, with paid plans from $20 a month that lower the fee per sale. Its pricing page names Stripe as its payout provider, so check that point before you commit.

Payoneer, for freelancers paid by wire

Payoneer is not a checkout but a receiving account, the safety net for consultants that Paddle turns away. A reviewer on the US App Store calls it safe, easy and a godsend for freelancers. Fees are on Payoneer’s pricing page.

The EIN clock for owners outside the US

For a foreign owner, the EIN is the slowest piece of the file. The IRS instructions for Form SS-4 say applicants with no US presence can’t use the online application.

You can call 267-941-1099, which is not toll-free. The line answers from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday. A fax usually returns the EIN within four business days, while mail takes about four weeks.

Then Stripe’s own clock starts: three to four weeks on average before the IRS database shows the number. A Stripe account rejected for an unverified EIN mostly needs time and the SS-4 letter, not a new application. Applying by mail from Lagos or Lisbon, plan on roughly two months before a clean check.

A US disregarded entity wholly owned by a foreign person files information returns on Form 5472, and line 9a of the SS-4 flags that status.

Our selection criteria

We tied each refusal cause to an official Stripe page, read in October 2026. Fees come from each platform’s pricing page; user stories from Trustpilot and the US App Store.

We dropped two tips that circulate without a source. No Stripe page we read sets a 30-day wait before a new attempt; the closed-accounts page points to the review form instead. Stripe’s physical presence FAQ says a registered agent or virtual mailbox address only blocks Issuing, Treasury and Opal. Payments stay available.

Good to know

Scan the IRS letter to PDF from the paper original: Stripe already refuses screenshots and converted files for ID documents, so don’t test it with the EIN letter.

Keep the proof of address separate from the passport. Stripe will not let one document cover two requirements, and if your country has no listed address document, Stripe takes a utility bill or bank statement issued within six months.

Before you apply, publish refund, cancellation and privacy policies, prices with their currency and a contact email. Stripe’s website checklist asks for contact methods beyond a form.

Your questions

Is a Stripe account rejected because the owner lives abroad?

No. Stripe accepts a US-registered business run from another country, and a non-resident representative verifies with a passport. Refusals come from the file or the business model.

How long until Stripe recognizes a new EIN?

About three to four weeks on average, according to Stripe.

What replaces Stripe for a restricted business?

Paddle, for software it accepts, since it does not depend on Stripe.
