Prices and details checked in October 2026. Prices change, so we give ranges where plans vary.

One line deep in the Ahrefs pricing table matters more than any feature list in the Ahrefs vs Semrush debate. Its Rank Tracker refreshes keyword positions once a week, on every plan. Semrush and SE Ranking check theirs every day.

On a tight budget, that line sits next to two others: how many keywords each plan follows, and what a second login costs. Those three numbers, read on the official pages on October 28, 2026, are enough to pick a tool and to know when to move up.

Ahrefs vs Semrush vs SE Ranking: the short answer

Start with SE Ranking Core. It tracks 2,000 keywords every day for $129 a month, or $103.20 a month on a yearly plan. No other entry plan comes close on that count.

Ahrefs earns its price when backlinks drive your decisions: a rival’s new links, a broken link to fix, a site worth pitching. Semrush makes sense when you also buy Google Ads and want search and ad data in one account.

One definition helps before the numbers. A tracked keyword is a search, such as “roof repair Tucson”, whose Google position the tool records for your site. It is the report most owners open first, and the quota that moves the bill.

The last line is plain division: the monthly price over the keyword quota, times one hundred. SE Ranking gives you more than two and a half times the keywords of Ahrefs and four times those of Semrush, for the same price or less.

The trial line hides a detail. SE Ranking’s 14-day trial caps tracking at 750 keywords, so the full 2,000 only appear once you pay.

What 2,000 keywords and three logins really cost

Picture a home services company that follows 2,000 searches across its service pages. At SE Ranking, Core covers it for $129 a month. At Ahrefs, the jump to Standard costs $249.

Semrush is the awkward case. Pro+ at $299 stops at 1,500 keywords, and Advanced, which starts at 5,000, no longer shows a public price. The page asks you to request a demo.

Over a year on yearly billing, SE Ranking Core costs $1,238.40 and Ahrefs Standard $2,490. In the Ahrefs vs Semrush vs SE Ranking match, that gap of $1,251.60 would pay for a second year of SE Ranking.

Now add people. With two colleagues on the entry plan, the bill reaches $161 a month at SE Ranking, $209 at Ahrefs and at least $229 at Semrush. Over twelve months, that comes to $1,932, $2,508 and $2,748.

A fourth person reshuffles the order. Ahrefs Lite allows two extra users at most, so the team must move to Standard: $249 plus three seats at $60, or $429 a month. SE Ranking Core with three extra seats stays at $177, and Semrush SEO starts at $274.

For a small agency, SE Ranking Growth is the cleaner step. It costs $279 a month with three seats, 30 projects and 5,000 keywords included.

The three tools up close

SE Ranking: the widest quota for the money

Core tracks 2,000 keywords a day across 10 projects. Backlink research, a site audit of 250,000 pages a month and a Search Console connection come with it. Extra keywords start at $22.40 and extra seats at $16. The AI Search add-on, which follows your brand in AI answers, costs $89 a month on monthly billing.

Users on Trustpilot describe the savings in plain terms. An independent consultant with fifteen years in SEO has made it his main platform since going independent last year. Linked to an AI assistant through MCP, it “has shaved hours off repetitive tasks” such as keyword research and competitor checks. A UK customer finds as much in it as in pricier tools, for roughly a third of the price.

The recurring complaint comes from agencies. In September, a customer of several years saw tracking turn unreliable for about nine days and cancelled. Export your ranking history once a month, and a glitch never costs you data. See SE Ranking pricing.

You pay Ahrefs for its backlink data. Lite includes 750 keywords refreshed weekly, six months of history and 1,000 credits per user each month. Standard removes the credit cap and keeps two years of history.

There is no free trial, and the pricing page states that Ahrefs never runs discounts. For a single site, a Starter plan at $29 a month covers keyword and competitor research without the full Lite toolset.

Daily users explain why they stay. A French SEO professional leans on Site Explorer for backlinks and competitors. “I’d genuinely struggle to replace” it, the review reads.

The criticism worth knowing concerns traffic estimates. A UK analyst compared them with first-party analytics on a site whose real traffic was known and found them far below the real figures. Read them as a guide and check them against Search Console. See Ahrefs pricing.

Semrush: search and ads in one account

The SEO plan tracks 500 keywords a day on 5 websites, with position tracking, a site audit and AI visibility reports. Starter, at $199, adds MCP access and 50 AI prompts but keeps the same 500 keywords. For 1,500, you need Pro+.

Long-time users praise its breadth. A US marketer of several years runs keyword research, content gaps, rank tracking and site health checks from the same account. “It’s one of those tools I consistently come back to,” the review adds.

The complaint that keeps coming back on Trustpilot is billing. Several users were charged the moment the 7-day trial ended. Set a reminder for day five and cancel before day seven if the tool is not for you. See Semrush pricing.

The US detail: rankings shift from one city to the next

A plumber in Phoenix does not rank the same way in Mesa or Scottsdale, because Google localizes its results. For a local business, the real question is how many places each plan can follow.

SE Ranking Core includes 3 locations in its local tracker, with 1,500 local and map keywords, and extra locations from $18.40. Semrush lists multi-location tracking from Pro+, at $299 a month. Ahrefs offers a Google Business Profile monitor, still in beta.

Then test the volumes against your own data. Pick twenty searches where your site averages first place in Google Search Console, the free Google tool. At that position, your impressions give a fair floor for real monthly demand.

During the trials, note the volume each tool shows for those twenty searches on the same day. The tool with the smallest average gap from your impressions reads your market best.

How we chose

We read the three official pricing pages on October 28, 2026, in US dollars. Then we priced the same needs on each: 2,000 keywords, then teams of three and four. The user stories come from Trustpilot reviews written in English, read in full.

Before you buy

Track only the searches that bring customers. Two hundred well-chosen keywords beat 2,000 that nobody reads.

Run the trials one after another, not side by side, so each gets your full attention. Write the end date of each trial in your calendar the day you sign up.

Wait a full month before you commit to a year. SE Ranking then saves you 20%, and Ahrefs, whose page advertises up to 17% off for yearly billing, switches you through its support team.

Frequently asked questions

Ahrefs vs Semrush: which one costs less?

On monthly billing, Ahrefs Lite costs $10 less than Semrush SEO. On a yearly plan the order holds, at $107.50 against $117.33 a month. Per tracked keyword Ahrefs is also cheaper, but its positions refresh only weekly.

Can I try them for free?

Semrush offers 7 days and SE Ranking 14 days, with no card needed at SE Ranking. Ahrefs has no trial, but site owners get a free plan with limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit.

Ahrefs. Its link index is the reason most of its users accept a smaller keyword quota.

Key takeaways

Count the keywords you need to follow, then the people who will log in. Those two numbers pick the plan before any demo does.

On a tight budget, SE Ranking Core settles the Ahrefs vs Semrush question. Ahrefs is the tool for link research, and Semrush suits teams that run search ads next to their SEO.

Rank reports often end up in a weekly email, and Zapier vs Make vs n8n shows which of the three can automate that hand-off. The visitors your keywords bring in can then join a list priced in Brevo vs Mailchimp vs MailerLite. The SEO logins your team shares belong in a team password manager.
